Stop Puppies from Digging

Your puppy is going to dig. There are many reasons why a puppy digs. Perhaps his breed was made to dig. Certain breeds or terrier have a digging instinct that’s hard to ignore. Other times your dog may be hot. The dirt is cool, and so puppy digs a hole in order to lie down in the dirt.

Most of the time, though, the real reason a puppy digs is probably because he’s bored, and there’s not much else to do. So he entertains himself by digging holes in the yard. Whatever the reason for their behavior, you can stop puppies from digging very easily.

How to Stop Puppy From Begging?

The first suggestion is to entertain your dog. You can do this by buying interactive toys that he can play with when he’s alone.

Alternately, you can play with your dog. This is a great way to stop digging. Teach him to fetch with a squeak toy or an old tennis ball. Keep him busy by throwing more than one object around so he can chase it.

You can also take your puppy on longer walks, or even runs. If you or your kids have a bike, hook the puppy up on a leash and just go for a ride around the block. He’ll be too tired to dig holes in the yard once you get back home

It also helps to bring your dog into the house more often. This is a simpler way to stop your puppy digging. If your dog spends most of his time outside, he’s going to dig. It’s very simple. If, however, he’s in the house, he can’t dig anywhere. There’s no dirt. He’ll also stay cool inside of the house, which is another reason that puppies dig around in the yard. And he’ll have access to you and his toys. You can also put toys outside for him to play with, so that he won’t dig around in the yard.

Sometimes, though, there is just no way to stop puppies from digging in the yard. And that’s fine! As mentioned before, maybe your dog was just bred to dig. If this is the case, give him a spot in the yard where it’s fine for him to dig around.

To show him it’s acceptable to dig there, you can bury a treat or a toy in that spot. Your dog will go looking for it. Do this frequently, at least once a day, until he understands that this is his special digging spot.
