How to House Break a Puppy – The Litter Box Method

When most people learn how to house break a puppy, they are taught how to teach a dog to use the bathroom outside.  A few adventurous dog owners might also use newspaper training.  However, there is a new dog toileting method on the horizon.  It involves using a litter box to house break a dog.  No, you did not misread that last line.

Dogs that weigh 20 pounds or less can be trained to use a litter box just like a cat.  In the process, both you and your pet gain independence.  Your dog can relieve themselves whenever they like, and you do not have to worry about walking your animal.

Of course, for many dog owners one question remains.  How do you learn house breaking with the litter box method?  First, you must choose the right type of litter box.

Try to avoid those with high walls, as the dog may believe that the litter box is a den.  Consequently, he may not want to relieve himself because he sees the area as his living quarters.  So, either stick with a specially-designed doggy litter box or a traditional box with flat sides.  Also, make sure you keep things simple.  Stay away from automatic litter boxes as they might scare a young dog.  Grass litter boxes may also cause confusion as they may inadvertently encourage digging.

The next step might be a little more challenging.  In fact, when it comes to learning how to house break, it will either make or break your training.  It involves actually teaching your dog how to use the litter box.  The easiest method for doing this is also the most ironic.  If your dog eliminates in a particular spot in your house, put a towel in that location.

Now put the towel in the litter box and place the box in that area.  At first, your dog will eliminate around the litter box.  When you see him do this, give him a firm “No,” and place him in his litter box.  The moment he eliminates in his box, give him a treat.  Over the course of a few weeks he will establish a routine, though you must remain consistent.  This is what makes litter box training so challenging, since it is easy to give up in the beginning.

In conclusion learning how to house break a puppy with a litter box is really no different than any other method.  It’s just a matter of perception.  If you believe litter box training is impossible to do, you will fail early on in the process.  This is why you should change your mindset altogether.

Research other dog owners who have been successful with this method.  After that, visualize the same thing for your dog.  You may feel silly, but in the long run, before you can train a dog you must train yourself.  It is only then that you will have the fortitude to stick through the frustrations of litter box training.
